A majlis is large room for entertaining and receiving guests. In a Qatari home, there are usually two kinds of majlis’; one for the women and one for the men.
Typically, a space like this would be styled very traditionally, however, we decided to create a contemporary and modern male majlis with activities other than sitting and relaxing, to take place.

The Majlis was designed to cater for the needs of a 28 year old Qatari man, Ahmad, who usually meets with his business associates, watches soccer matches and plays video games.
The room contains an area each for lounging, gaming and a small pantry to store food and drinks.
Current activity: Ahmad has called a few friends over to watch and enjoy a game of soccer.
This room was designed around the environments of the two main groups of people who once occupied and grew into the young nation of Qatar; the pearl divers and the Bedouins (nomads). Hence, ‘land and sea’ became the concept from which materials, forms and colors were adapted.
Wooden fluted panels were fixed onto the walls and wooden cabinet door for the pantry, both inspired by the fishing boats taken out to sea by pearl divers.
The idea of the desert was applied by using rugs and cushion covers in beige and with soft velvet textures. Colors and hues blue for textiles, such as curtains, and other accessories were used to reflect the sea.
